How does a floor stand hold a bike up?

Which type suits my space?

Check the stated tyre-width range before buying, because a chock cut for road tyres will not accept a 2.4in mountain bike tyre, and a wide one lets a 25mm tyre lean and scuff.
Floor stand or a wall mount?
A floor stand is the answer when you cannot or will not drill, and it lets you move the whole arrangement later; the trade-off is that it occupies floor you could otherwise walk on. Fixed wall mounts and ceiling mounts give the space back but need sound masonry or located timber studs, and heavy e-bikes rule out some of them entirely. Weight is the other deciding factor: lifting a 25kg e-bike onto a hook every day gets old, while rolling it into a floor chock does not.
What should I check on a used floor stand?
Look at the base welds and the underside of the tube for rust, since these live on cold concrete and corrode from the ground up. On a gravity stand, extend the threaded or sprung foot fully and check it still holds tension, and check the ceiling and floor pads are present and not perished — a stand that will not tension is scrap, and the pads are what stop it marking the ceiling. On chocks and racks, look for bent uprights from a bike falling, and count the grub screws and rubber sleeves, because the plastic protectors that stop a fork or frame being scuffed are the parts most often missing.
What is a used floor stand worth?
They are bulky, awkward to post and usually collection only, so used prices sit well below new and the sensible ones are local. That said, a stand missing its pads or fixings is often not worth restoring, since fittings for older models can be difficult to match. Complete examples with all their rubber intact are the ones worth travelling for, and they are common in the bike storage listings when people move house.
