Wall, ceiling or floor — which storage suits the space?

How much weight does a bike hook need to hold?
A road bike is around 8kg and a full-suspension e-bike can be 25kg, and that load is applied as leverage on the fixing rather than straight down. Fix into timber studs or solid masonry with anchors rated well above the bike's weight; plasterboard plugs alone are not enough for anything but the lightest bike. Ceiling hoists must go into a joist, found properly rather than guessed at.
Does hanging a bike by a wheel damage it?
A standard wheel carries the weight of a bike hanging from one rim without complaint, since it is far less than the load it takes when you ride over a kerb. Rubber-sleeved hooks stop the metal marking the rim, and it is worth checking the manufacturer's guidance for lightweight carbon rims. Is a storage rack the same as a work stand?

What should I check on a used rack or hoist?
Plastic hooks and cradles that have lived in a sunny shed go brittle and snap without warning, so flex them before buying. On hoists, check the cord for fraying at the pulleys, spin the pulleys for grit and seizing, and confirm the rope cleat still locks. On folding wall racks, check the pivot for slop and the return spring for tension, and count the brackets against what the design should have.
What is a fair price for used bike storage?
Racks and hoists are inexpensive new, so used only makes sense complete and locally collected, at well under half price. Treat missing wall plugs and anchors as normal and buy new ones regardless, because expansion fixings are single-use and the old ones tell you nothing about the wall they are going into now. Buy new if the item has no visible weight rating and you are hanging an e-bike from it.
