Which lockring pattern do I need?

Most modern cassettes and centre-lock rotors take the 12-spline tool that fits Shimano and SRAM lockrings — the Park Tool FR-5 series and Shimano TL-LR15 are common examples of this pattern. Campagnolo cassettes use a different fitting and will not accept it. Older threaded freewheels are another matter again, needing a remover matched to the specific freewheel make, and there were several incompatible patterns. Buy the tool for the parts you own rather than a universal claim, and prefer versions with a guide pin if you will use it on a wheel with a quick-release skewer, since the skewer holds the tool centred while you break the lockring free.

Lockring tool or chain whip?

They do opposite halves of one job. The lockring tool turns the ring; a chain whip holds the sprockets still so the ring turns against something. Buying the lockring tool alone means you can undo a centre-lock rotor, where the hub is held by the wheel, but not a cassette, where everything freewheels. The exception is a threaded freewheel, which unscrews without a whip. Both tools live under cassette and freewheel tools and are usually bought together.

What should I look for on a used one?

Look straight into the splines. The driving faces should be square-edged and full height; rounded, shiny or shortened teeth mean it has cammed out before and it will do so again, chewing the soft alloy lockring and leaving you with a cassette you cannot remove. Check the guide pin, if the design has one, for straightness and for a thread that still holds — a wobbling pin lets the tool tilt. On socket types, inspect the 1/2in drive square for rounded corners, and on alloy-bodied tools look for hairline cracks around the drive opening. Light rust on the outside is irrelevant; anything that has deformed the spline profile is not, because the fit is measured in fractions of a millimetre.

Is buying used sensible here?

Yes, provided the splines are sharp. These are simple hardened fittings that last for many cassette changes, and a good used one at around half of new is sound value. The thing worth paying attention to is the standard it fits, not the age. Buy new if you see any spline rounding, if the guide pin is missing from a design that needs it, or if the seller cannot say which lockrings it fits — the tool costs little next to a seized cassette and a damaged freehub body.
