What is a tubeless inflation kit?
It is an air reservoir plus a fast-opening valve. Three formats dominate: a floor pump with a second chamber built into the barrel, such as the Topeak JoeBlow Booster or Bontrager TLR Flash Charger design; a standalone tank like the Airshot that you fill from any pump and then connect; and a compressor with a tyre chuck, if you already have one in the garage. All three do the same thing — dump a litre of air through the valve stem in about a second.
Charger pump or a separate air tank?
A charger pump is one object doing two jobs, which suits a small workshop, but the chamber adds bulk and the pumping action is heavier than a plain track pump. A standalone tank is the better choice if you already own a floor pump you like, and it can be charged from a garage compressor or a petrol station line. Tanks are also easier to lend and to store on a shelf.
Can you seat a tubeless tyre without one?
Often, yes. Remove the valve core so the whole stem becomes the airway, brush soapy water round the bead, and pump hard and fast — many road and gravel tyres seat on the first go. Tyres that resist are usually loose-fitting on a shallow rim bed, folded from long storage, or fitted to a rim with too little tape. CO2 cartridges will also seat a bead, but each attempt costs a cartridge and the gas can unsettle latex sealant, so they are better kept for roadside use.
What goes wrong with them?
The chuck O-ring is the usual failure — once it hardens, the head leaks while you are trying to charge the tank and it never reaches pressure. Gauges on charger pumps drift over time and are only worth trusting to within a few psi. On integrated pumps, check the valve that isolates the chamber, since a sticking one bleeds the charge slowly instead of releasing it in a burst. Most kits include a valve core tool, which is the part people lose first.
How much should you pay, and do you need one?
Standalone tanks sit at the cheaper end, charger pumps cost roughly double a plain track pump, and a small compressor costs more again but earns it if you also run a workshop. If you fit tubeless tyres once a year, the maths rarely works — borrow one, or use the valve-core-out method with the pump you already own. If you swap tyres seasonally, run wide mountain bike rubber, or top up sealant every few months, the kit pays for itself in avoided frustration.
