What measuring tools does a home mechanic actually need?
Three cover most jobs: a chain gauge to catch elongation before it wears the cassette, a 150mm calliper for seatpost diameters (27.2, 30.9 and 31.6mm), rotor thickness and pad depth, and a torque wrench that reads down to the 4–6Nm used on stem faceplates, seat clamps and carbon bars. Digital, dial or vernier callipers?
Digital reads to 0.01mm and takes no interpretation, but the cell drains between uses and the display can drift; vernier and dial models have nothing to go flat and hold their accuracy for decades in exchange for reading a scale by eye. For the jobs that come up most the precision argument is academic — you are checking a rotor that started at 1.8mm against a 1.5mm Shimano minimum, which any of the three will show. How is this different from wheel building tools?
Measurement tools report a value; wheel building tools change the wheel. A tension meter and a dishing gauge straddle the line, which is why sellers list them on either side — if you are buying to build wheels rather than to inspect parts, check both categories before deciding.
What should I check on a used calliper or gauge?
Close a calliper fully and hold it up to a light: any daylight along the jaws means it has been dropped, and it will read long from then on. On digital models look inside the battery hatch for the pale crust of a leaked SR44 cell, and check that it zeroes and still reads zero after sliding out to 150mm and back. Chain gauges wear at the pins that sit in the rollers, so a heavily used Park Tool CC-3.2 drops in deeper than it should and condemns chains early; a click-type torque wrench stored wound up to its maximum will have taken a set in the spring.
What is a fair price for a used measuring tool?
Steel gauges lose almost no function with age, so price tracks condition rather than year — around half of new is normal for a working digital calliper, a little more for a Mitutoyo or Park Tool item complete with its case. Buy new for the tool that sets the standard for everything else: a torque wrench with no calibration history and no way to test it is a guess with a handle. Small items such as chain checkers are cheap enough new that postage often decides it.
