What are electrical tools used for on a bike?

Two jobs, mostly. The first is mechanical work that only exists because of the motor — removing a chainring lockring from a mid-drive, or torquing motor mounting bolts that are far tighter than the 5Nm a stem sees. The second is electrical fault finding: measuring cell voltage across a pack, tracing a broken speed sensor wire, or plugging an interface in to read the error code the display is showing.

E-bike tools or diagnostic tools — which do I need?

If the bike runs but reports a fault, or you want firmware and settings, you need something that talks to the system, and those are listed under diagnostic tools. If the bike needs a service — motor out, chainring off, battery mount replaced — you need the spanners and splines under e-bike specific tools. Owners doing their own servicing usually end up with one of each.

How do these differ from ordinary workshop hand tools?

Two things set them apart. They are system-specific in a way a 5mm hex key never is, so a Bosch fitting will not serve a Shimano STEPS or Brose motor; and some of them are safety-rated, because a 36V or 48V pack holds enough energy to weld a screwdriver to a busbar. General spanners, hex keys and pliers stay in the main tools category.

What to check when buying electrical tools used

On any interface cable, look closely at the connector pins for bending and at the strain relief where the cable enters the plug, since that is where they fail and the fault is intermittent rather than obvious. Ask what system and generation the seller actually used it on, and bear in mind that manufacturer software can be tied to accounts or logins the tool itself cannot supply. On a multimeter, check the fuse — a large proportion of second-hand meters have a blown high-current fuse and read nothing on the 10A range — and check the probe leads for nicks in the insulation. Soldering irons want a tip that still takes solder rather than one crusted with grey oxide.

What is a used electrical tool worth?

Motor-specific spanners depreciate heavily because they fit one thing and get used twice a year, which is what makes them worth buying used. Interfaces are the opposite: their value depends entirely on whether they still connect to anything, so pay for one only if the seller can say what it was last used with. Buy new for anything insulated or safety-rated, where you are paying for a rating you cannot verify on someone else's tool.
