Carbon or alloy rims?

Carbon is where the aero efficiency and the low climbing weight live — deep sections cut through the air, and shallow carbon builds are the lightest option for going uphill. Alloy remains the sensible choice for durability and all-weather riding: it survives potholes and winter grit, brakes predictably in the wet on rim-brake bikes, and costs far less to replace if a rim is written off. High-end carbon setups and reliable alloy pairs both come up constantly second-hand, so decide which job the wheels are doing before you filter on price.

Will the wheelset fit my bike?

Axle standard decides this before anything else. Rim-brake road bikes use 100mm front and 130mm rear spacing with quick-release skewers; disc-brake road bikes almost always use 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear thru-axles. The two are not interchangeable, and a hub can sometimes be converted with an end-cap kit but often cannot, so confirm the spacing in the listing rather than assuming. Second-hand wheels frequently arrive without skewers, which is not a problem — replacement skewers are cheap and the 5mm rod fits any standard hub.

Which freehub body do I need?

The freehub has to match your cassette. Shimano and SRAM 11-speed road cassettes share the HG body; SRAM's 12-speed road groupsets need XDR; Campagnolo's 12- and 13-speed cassettes need N3W. Many hubs take a swappable freehub body, so a wheelset with the wrong one is not automatically ruled out — but the part costs money, so factor it into the price rather than discovering it after the wheels arrive.

What rim depth should I choose?

Around 30mm is the shallow, light, climbing-friendly depth and the least affected by side winds. Roughly 40-50mm is the all-round choice, quick on the flat without being a handful on an exposed road. Anything over 60mm is built for flat, fast riding at the cost of being pushed around in crosswinds. Rim width matters as much as depth: wider modern rims suit 28mm and up, and most current wheelsets are tubeless-ready, so check what the seller has been running and whether the tyres are included in the sale.

Rim brake or disc?

Rim-brake wheels have a machined braking surface on the rim, which is a consumable — it wears down as the pads bite it. Disc wheels have no braking surface at all but do need a rotor mount that matches your rotors, either centre-lock or 6-bolt, and adaptors exist between the two. A disc wheelset cannot be used on a rim-brake frame and vice versa, so this is the second thing to check after axle spacing.

What should I check buying used?

Spin each wheel and watch for vertical hop and side-to-side wobble; minor truing is normal, a visible buckle is not. Hold the rim and rock it laterally to feel for play in the hub bearings, then squeeze pairs of spokes to find loose or wildly uneven tension. On rim-brake wheels, look at the braking surface for concavity and for the wear indicator groove — a dished sidewall means the rim is finished. On carbon, inspect around the spoke holes and the rim bed for hairline cracks, and ask whether the wheels have been crashed. If only one wheel of a pair is beyond saving, singles turn up regularly under front wheels.
