Bar End Plug Buying Guide
Bar end plugs are a legal requirement for racing and a safety feature for everyone — an uncapped handlebar end can cause serious injury in a crash. They also finish off your bar tape wrap.
Types
Push-in plastic plugs come with most bar tape and do the job. Expanding alloy plugs (Cinelli, Wolf Tooth) grip from inside the bar and won't pop out mid-ride. Some lock in with a bolt that expands a rubber collar for a secure fit.
Materials & Weight
Plastic: 2-5g per pair, functional. Alloy: 10-20g per pair, secure and available in anodised colours. Carbon: 5-10g, lightweight with a premium look. Titanium bolt versions save a gram or two over steel.
Compatibility
Most road bars have a standard internal diameter (approx 22-24mm at the ends), so universal plugs fit. Some aero bars have non-standard openings — check before buying specialised plugs.
