Buying Guide

What is an electric hybrid bike?

An e-hybrid sits between a road bike and a mountain bike, with an upright riding position and tyres that handle city streets and country lanes equally well. The motor gives you the boost to arrive at work without changing your shirt and to keep up on a longer weekend ride, which is what makes these bikes such capable all-rounders.

Which models should you look at?

The Raleigh Motus, the Specialized Turbo Vado and the Cube Touring Hybrid come up most often on the used market, and all three hold their value because they were built to take daily mileage. Well-known models are easier to buy second-hand: parts are available, service histories exist, and you can check what a fair price looks like against other listings.

What should I check buying used?

The battery is the expensive part, so ask its age, how many charge cycles it has done and whether the original charger and both keys for the battery lock are included. Beyond that it's an ordinary bike check: brake pads, tyres, chain wear and any play in the wheels and headset. Ask for the service history, as e-bikes carry more weight and more torque than the frames and drivetrains are used to.

E-hybrid or a different style of e-bike?

An e-hybrid is the right call if your riding is mixed and mostly on tarmac and easy paths. If your commute involves a train or a small flat, electric folding bikes solve the storage problem instead, and if you ride real trails an e-MTB gives you the suspension and geometry to do it properly.

Where do I start looking?

Browse, buy or sell across the full range of electric bikes, from first e-hybrids to upgrades. Buying from private sellers means dealing with the person who rode the bike, so you can ask about the battery and the mileage before you travel to see it.
